HDA Design review

Humanitarian Data Alliance · Design options · Draft for review

Four website themes and five logo concepts.

A shared home page for iMMAP, CartONG, HOT and Kobo, designed four ways, with five logo concepts that work in any of them. Each theme blends colours and type the four member brands already share, so the alliance feels familiar rather than like a fifth brand.

How to review

Every page has a small review bar at the bottom. Use it to switch theme, page and logo without losing your place.

  1. Open a theme below. Each one has a home page and a style guide covering logo use, colour, type, components and graphics.
  2. Try other logos with the Logo menu in the review bar. Every logo works in every theme, so any combination is valid.
  3. Share a combination with “Copy link”, and give feedback as, for example, “Theme B + Logo 3”. Mixing parts is fine too, e.g. “A’s layout with C’s colours”.

Website themes

All four use the same content, drawn from the MoU values and recent meeting notes. Figures and dates marked “TBC” are placeholders to confirm.

Logo concepts

Each concept is built from four equal parts, one for each member, with no part given more weight. See the logos page for rationale, variants and co-branding.

Design principles

Taken from the collaboration documents, and applied to every option.

People before data

The MoU’s first value. Copy leads with outcomes for affected communities. Warm neutrals and plain language keep it human.

Alongside, not above

A light identity that sits next to the member brands. No member colour is “owned” by one organisation, and all four are always named.

Built from what we share

Navy (iMMAP, Kobo, CartONG), red (iMMAP, HOT) and teal (CartONG, Kobo) recur across our sites, so the palettes start there.

Data and maps, visibly

Dot maps, contours, layers and tiles say “GIS and data” without stock photos.

Low bandwidth, high access

Static HTML, inline SVG graphics, WCAG AA contrast checks and no heavy imagery, so it works well on field connections.

Open and interoperable

Open-source fonts and a simple token system make it easy for any member’s team to reuse in slides, reports and social posts.

Status: design exploration only. Nothing here is final or public, and the site is marked noindex. Member names are shown as text. We’d swap in official member logos once a direction is chosen.
